Paris Aims To Be the Next Oprah Winfrey

PARIS HILTON ANNOUNCES SUMMER READING LIST IN EFFORT TO ENCOURAGE LITERACY
Paris Hilton has decided to use her high-profile status to help increase literacy. She has announced a four-book summer reading list that she feels is varied and will both inspire and entertain readers./24-7PressRelease/ - SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY, July 08, 2007 - Now that she is out of jail, Paris Hilton, the celebrity socialite and actress, is anxious to do things that can have a beneficial influence on people. One of her first actions has been to announce her four-book summer reading list, filled with books old and new, with the hopes that it will help increase literacy. Paris Hilton stated that, “Oprah Winfrey has had such a positive influence on people by encouraging reading with her various book lists, book clubs, and recommended books, that I thought I could join in the effort to encourage people to not only read, but read worthwhile books, and so I have chosen four books that I know people will enjoy reading. I love to read and write - as I told Larry King in my recent interview with him, in school I loved being in creative writing classes.”
In announcing her summer reading list, Paris Hilton has chosen books that represent a varied spectrum. First and foremost on her list is the Bible, which is the book that helped her get through her prison experience. “When I read the Bible, I am always impressed by its timeless wisdom and simple but profound messages.”
Next on her reading list is “The Power of Now,” Eckhart Tolle’s bestseller that was first published in 1999. “This is such an important book, because it teaches the reader to be in the moment, to focus your mind on the here and now, and to pay attention. For so many people, focusing and paying attention is a real problem, and so many people are so easily distracted. This book has helped me immensely with my own attention deficit disorder.”
The third book is the recent phenomenon, “The Secret,” by Rhonda Byrne, a book Paris Hilton believes everyone should read. “This book has such an important message: that the mind has incredible power, and that we can use it to create the reality that we want.”
The last book on Paris Hilton’s reading list is a novel that just came out entitled, “The Knuckleball From Hell,” by Michael Wayne. Paris Hilton says that, “I absolutely loved this book! It is the funniest book I have ever read, and I have read a lot of funny books. Humor and laughter is such an important thing, and a good sense of humor helps keep us sane. This book will brighten your day and help you see the world in a fresh light.”
Now, I know Paris is looking to use her celebrity to do philanthropic works. My question here is, “Why a reading list?” Do we really need Paris Hilton to suggest books we need to read? As philanthropic works go, Paris, I’m really not sure this was the best place for you to start. How about donating books or funds to buy them to our education system, or to non-profit organizations which provide books to children who need them? I’d like to see Paris do something a little more substantial, if you know what I mean?

I totally agree with you. It would really make a difference if she picked 100-1000 of each of those books and donated it to a cause/school/hospital or something. It would really show a change. All this looks to me, (and I hate to say it) but advertisement for the books. I know Britney Spears wears several outfits because she is paid, is Paris being paid to promote the books?

Well, I certainlly hope no one is paying Paris to promote the Bible. It certainly would be possible for the other books, though!

I am the author of “The Knuckleball From Hell,” and was alerted to this article by someone who read my book. I was surprised and shocked when I heard that Paris Hilton added my book to her reading list, and I knew nothing about it beforehand. She was not paid a fee for doing it, as this is a book published by a small publishing company, and not only do they not have the budget to do such a thing, it would frankly be beneath them. I’m not sure if Paris Hilton’s adding my book to her reading list is a good thing or not, but I accept it for what it is.
