Al Gore urges people to care for the planet and not Paris Hilton
Sunday, December 14th, 2008Seriously and honestly speaking, which topic interests you more, the lives of Hollywood celebrities or finding ways and means to protect our planet?
Now we all know the sad answer to that; no words needed.
And I guess that is exactly the sentiment of former US vice-president, Al Gore when he spoke to the delegates at the United Nations Climate Change talks in Poland recently.
“The political systems of the developed world have become sclerotic. We have to overcome the paralysis that has prevented us from acting and focus clearly and unblinkingly on this crisis rather than spending so much time on OJ Simpson, Paris Hilton and Anna Nicole Smith,” Gore named the jailed ex-All American football player, our attention-loving dear heiress, and the late sex symbol to emphasize how celebrity-obsessed this world has become and has prevented people from facing world crisis.
Gore, who’s been meeting with the US President-elect Barack Obama was also optimistic with the latter’s future leadership, saying, “Once he [Obama] is president, the US will engage vigorously in theses negotiations and help to lead the world towards a new era on global co-operation on climate change.”
Unfortunately I don’t think recognizing the fact that the world is more concerned on the lives of their idols than taking care of the planet is enough to bring change. I mean you know, in my opinion, people show more interest to Hollywood celebrities because they seem to bring a diversion to their busy and relatively boring lives.
Talking about climate change and the future of our planet seem to just bring depression to us ‘ordinary’ people.
But again, I honestly agree and believe in the former vice-president’s call.
